15 Days to CAT 2016

10-tips

Let us quickly check out the few things to facilitate fine tuning of the strategy.

Practice More, Don’t explore new territories

This is the time when you should be practicing more to strengthen grasp over concepts you know. There is no need at this point of time to go and explore new territories of theories/concepts which you haven’t read much till now. It might just turn you nervous or reduce your confidence in case you are not able to solve it with good efficiency.

Don’t get confused with Mocks

Do not get bogged down thinking that your performance in mocks is going to dictate your score in actual CAT as well. There have been people in the past who have scored pretty well on D-Day despite an average or below average performance at times in mocks. So, this is not something that should bother you and affect your performance on C-Day.

In addition to the above, do not spend much time in questions of mocks which may just erode your conceptual understanding and turn you panicky. Do not end up wasting your time on one odd question that popped up from a concept not known to you, rather focus on other questions which you can handle really well.

Acclimatize yourself with timings

This is a crucial aspect which often goes unnoticed, so if you haven’t taken care of it yet – DO IT NOW. Write the mock CATs at the same time as that of the slot of your actual CAT, or at the time closest to it. Let your mind get acclimatized to working at its best during the time at which you are going to take actual CAT.

Remember, the purpose is to use mocks as a platform to get you ready for the actual battle.

Further Strengthen your Strong Areas

The time has come when you should be focusing more on your strong areas to further strengthen them, rather than working on your weak areas. Past analysis says that the average increment that can be achieved by focusing on strong areas at this point of time is much more than what can be achieved by spending time on weak areas at this stage.

Do not worry about 1-2 topics because if you cannot do well in these, there are all other topics over which you have quite a good hold and can crack every question that comes from them, enabling you to score high.

Important Topics

Just for a quick revision, we are listing here important topics (as per the past trends).

Quant

  • Numbers , Geometry and Menstruation
  • Algebra – Focus on equations, Inequalities, Progressions and Indices
  • Permutations and Combinations
  • Arithmetic – Focus on Percentages, Averages, Fractions (would be helpful in DI as well)
  • Arithmetic- Profit and Loss, Time and Work

Data Interpretation

  • Expected to be a traditional and calculation oriented
  • Market Share, Increase/Decrease, Percentages, Averages, Fractions – to play a major role

Verbal Ability

  • Reading Comprehension- Prefer versatile reading as topics may not necessarily be from areas of your comfort zone
  • Sentence Corrections
  • Vocabulary based questions- Based more on contextual usage
  • Para-Jumbles

Do not get bugged by Short listing Criteria

This is the stage where your entire focus should be on maximizing your scores and enhance your chances of being short listed for the next phase of the admission process to the best possible. Do not think too much on selection criteria and the weightage given to different parameters like academics etc.

Past is past and it is not in your scope to change it. So, there is no point in getting disappointed because of something that is not in your hand. Rather, stay determined and work on what is in your hand. And, the only thing in your hand at this stage is to maximize your exam score. Strengthen your case for being short listed in the next phase of the admission process with a high score. Leave the rest to destiny; nothing can stop you from succeeding and having a successful career – if you deserve it.
